ALEXANDRIA, Virginia —TruAge has hired Patrick Abernathy as Head of Retail Engagement and Systems.

Abernathy has more than 20 years of industry experience, most recently serving as IT Director for Jacksons Food Stores, a Meridian, Idaho-based convenience store chain with approximately 240 stores. Previously, he held the same position for Sapp Bros. Travel Centers.

TruAge also recently announced Kyle McKeen as CEO of the company.

Alexandria, Virginia-based NACS, the global trade association representing the convenience and fuel retail industry, and Conexxus, its standards partner, developed TruAge. It is a universally accepted age verification system that makes it more accurate to verify the age of an adult customer when purchasing age-restricted products such as tobacco and the alcohol.

TruAge is free to retailers, consumers, and point-of-sale (POS) providers, and its creators have placed relevant intellectual property in the public domain, which they claim removes significant barriers to adoption. Several sponsors, including Altria Group Distribution Co., Reynolds American Inc., Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors Beverage Co., support TruAge.

TruAge launched in limited testing in late 2021. It will expand more pilot testing to California, Texas and Virginia ahead of its nationwide rollout, expected later this year.
